• The Past continuous is used for actions or situations in the past in progress, so not completed. Sometimes it's used for interrupted actions.

  Compare for example: :I was walking across the field when I saw him. (I was in the fields)

  and Yesterday I walked across the field. ( I crossed it completely)

• It is also used for temporary actions or situations in the past.

  E.g.: I was living in Spain at that time.

• We usually use it to describe the background, the scene, of the events in a story.
